0 Secret dog training tip teaching back up for leash walkingThis is another cool Dogmantics Dog Training Tip on how to teach your dog to walk next to you on a loose leash.

If you are consistent with this behavior, you can actually make pressure on the leash a CUE for the dog to back up and they learn to walk on a loose leash as a default.
=—-
Teaching a dog to back up into the heel position on walks is helpful for many reasons.

1- If you have more than one dog on a walk sometimes it can be hard to turn around and go the other way if both dogs are ahead of you. Teaching them to back into the heel position allows you to move freely

2- If you train your dog that when he reaches the end of the leash the only way he can move forwards again is to back up, he will consciously start avoiding hitting the end of the leash. This means- No more pulling on leash.

3- This is a great impulse control exercise based on the Premack Principle. In order to move forwards you must first move backwards.

0 Off Leash dog Training Go Play GameTo learn more about dog training in San Diego go to http://www.pamsdogacademy.com

http://ptfordogs.blogspot.com/

The “Go Play” Game is an attention game to help you have control and focus from your dog when he is off leash. In this video I use the Premack Principle which in short is letting the dog do what they want to do once they have done what you want them to do. In this case, I want Bandit’s attention and when he gives it to me, he can “Go Play” or sniff. I use this same principle with gopher holes (Isabelle can sniff the gopher holes after she does something for me – come when called, a trick, etc..)

I started playing this game with my dog Bandit when he was young and we started with a 50 foot long line, then when he was successful for a week of practicing the game I would shorten the long line, until finally he is off leash. We had setbacks at times and had to go back to the previous length long line, but eventually he was off leash and reliable. Still, if I am in an unsafe or new environment that I am not sure of what we will encounter or how he will act, I will put a short line on him. I would rather be SAFE than SORRY. This is a positive way to train your dog to be off leash and does not involve punishment! It lets the dog make the right choice and that choice is to pay attention to you.
Remember to use high value rewards as the smells and distractions might be more exciting that you or the treats. So bring out the best stuff when training and playing this game!

Soon your dog will be like Bandit where I could hardly get him to go play. He just wants to work. Clicker training is just amazing! The best part about clicker training is the awesome relationship that I have with my dogs! They love to work, they love me, and they are happy.

Happy Clicking!
